Prisoner of the Road

When I go, I go alone.  There ain’t no one ever looking out for me. Just the sun, my own lean shadow. And the wind out among the trees Home, it’s far beyond long lost horizons. Home I’ll never see. For I’ll be a prisoner of the road. And I hold no key that will ever set me free. (Lyrics by Sivert Høyem)

This song reminds me of a friend of mine. He was a wonderful and talented man in many ways. He loved playing football, and I loved playing football together with him at the football field. He played fair and treated me equal to the other gays, even though I was a girl. Even though he tried to live a normal life, he couldn’t. His lack of the right papers made him leave; seeking a place he could call home. He was a refugee and a prisoner of the road, holding no key that would set him free. Waiting for an opportunity to get a life, someone took it from him; so brutal and unfair. He died as a prisoner of the road.
